Concrete pavers look great, with large-format styles proving especially popular for making small outdoor spaces look larger. Concrete paving is now available in a range of styles, with sizes and colours to complement any home landscape design.
Concrete pavers are not nearly as dull or uniform as the name might suggest. Whether used in a driveway, a garden path or backyard, concrete paving can provide a neat look to your outdoor spaces, with many elegant styles available to suit any home exterior.
Trends in concrete paver design
When it comes to current trends in concrete paving, Dennis from Midland Brick says that large-format pavers are tending to be the most popular. "We're talking anything from 300x300mm upwards," he says. "Some people are going for even larger pavers, but once you install concrete pavers over the 400x400mm size they become a bit heavy to manipulate, and the cost of laying them goes through the roof as well."
Dennis believes that the popularity of the larger pavers is mainly due to trends in architectural design. "They exude a bit more of an upmarket feel, as opposed to the little standard 9x4 pavers," he says. "And a lot of people think the smaller size look more dated than the larger pavers."
Much like the trend in home interiors toward using larger floor tiles, the use of larger pavers also has another benefit, according to Dennis. "The larger format seems to create a perception of affluence and they also make any area that they cover look substantially more spacious," he says. This can be particularly important for outdoor areas that are on the smaller side.
In terms of colour, Dennis reveals that natural colours remain the most in demand, with charcoal, sandstone, terracotta and brown proving very popular.
How to lay concrete pavers
If you're wondering how to lay concrete pavers, the process is fairly straightforward. To install concrete pavers in your backyard: "You basically lay them as you would any other paving material," says Dennis. "You need a sand base and then you level that out and put the pavers down. People can do it themselves, but the size of the pavers sometimes puts people off."
