When it comes to choosing a security door for the home, it's important to work out just how serious you are about home security. Many people are loath to install security doors because they are worried about obscuring the aesthetic features of the main door.
While there are 'semi' security doors that may cover half or two-thirds of the main door, these are not considered true security doors.
"Those doors will serve a purpose in that they will provide a barrier between somebody who's at the front door and the people inside," says Stan from Page Doors, "but a true security door would be one that would not be able to be readily penetrated by people with an intention of breaking through that door."
A good security door should form a complete barrier between you and someone who comes to the door, and it should also allow you to leave the main door open and not have intruders be able to enter the house.
To create a really secure home environment, it's also worth considering installing home burglar alarms and security windows.
Thankfully, the days of the unattractive, utilitarian security doors are behind us. They now come in a range of attractive colours and styles that suit both contemporary and traditional homes. They can be fitted with standard flywire or with steel security mesh, and can be zinc plated to protect against corrosion.
It is possible to install a security door yourself, but given it's crucial that the door functions satisfactorily over a long period of time and that tricky issues can arise during installation, it's often safer to get a professional to do it.
"It might not always be possible to install a security door yourself if the timber of the main door frame is too soft, for example," says Stan. "You might have to do other things to carry the weight of the security door.
“So realistically, you would want to have somebody who's supplying the door fitting it. Also, if the people supplying the door fit it, they're responsible for the warranty of the operation of that door."
