While the beautiful look of Australian native timbers make them a popular choice for timber floor boards across the country, international timber species remain a coveted design element.
Consider the environment
Many homeowners are drawn to the alternative hues that imported timber floor boards can add to an interior. However, imported timber floor boards could weigh heavily on the conscience of environmentally sensitive renovators.
There are ways to achieve the finish of timber floor boards using exotic timbers, however. Steve Dadd at Boral Timber explains.
“We recently worked with a client who wanted to install an American Oak species to achieve a dark aesthetic throughout their home. Instead, we recommended an Australian-grown New England Oak species which was stained to obtain the rich colour they were after.”
Go native
In this case, choosing native timber flooring over an imported American Oak species offered a number of environmental and cost benefits. Eliminating the need for transportation of timber from overseas reduced the project’s carbon footprint considerably. It also provided a more cost-effective solution at the time due to the strength of the Australian dollar against the US dollar.
Rich colour
The result is a stunning deep colour which perfectly accentuates the timber’s highly featured grain. The combination of this distinctive grain and its uniform colour make New England Oak ideal for staining and there are a number of stains on the market suited to transforming and enhancing this versatile species.
Other Australian species which can be stained to make a great substitute to those from overseas are Messmate and Stringybark.
