Wrought iron fencing is just right

Whether your home is Federation style or of more modern era, wrought iron fencing can create a striking look and is available in a number of styles, from the decorative to the practical.

When you think of wrought iron, often the first thing that comes to mind is the beautiful old lacework and detailing that graces heritage homes. What people might not be aware of is that wrought iron fencing is also manufactured for – and can equally suit – contemporary homes.

"The majority of the wrought iron fencing we sell still goes to Federation-style homes; that's the more decorative fencing for a front yard," explains James Marotta from All-Ways Wrought Iron and Fencing. "This type of fencing incorporates a lot of scroll work and so forth."

But according to James, wrought iron fencing is also being used in more modern abodes. "What's been happening in the last couple of years is that a lot of developers are incorporating wrought iron into the newer, contemporary style of housing," he says.

Given that wrought iron is essentially solid steel, it tends to have a long life span - up to 50 or 60 years - if it has been through the appropriate treatment processes. "If wrought iron is not treated properly, it will corrode when it's exposed to the elements," says James.

With this in mind, when purchasing wrought iron fencing it's a good idea to get your salesperson to explain the various corrosion treatment options. In addition to this, ask to have a look at the company's previous work.

When inspecting the wrought iron, check that the various components have a robust structure, that the welding of the end product is tidy and, if it is heritage-style wrought iron, that there is symmetry to the scroll work. It's also important to ensure that the product complies with Australian building code regulations.

Wrought iron fencing can easily incorporate security elements; even the heritage style allows for this. "You could have the 'spear' fencing on the top of your heritage wrought iron fence for extra security," says James.

The one drawback to wrought iron fencing is that it is not particularly cheap.
