Europe has long been a world leader in bathroom design, with Australia taking its cues from the bathroom trends that develop there. And according to Ralf Banaski from luxury bathroomware retailer Villeroy & Boch, the latest designs emerging overseas are following a trend towards 'cocooning'.
"Current luxury bathroom trends focus on designing the ultimate bathroom in which to indulge and relax," he says. "Creating a bathroom sanctuary is a great way to forget busy and stressful days, by treating yourself to a calming experience."
These bathroom trends have resulted in the popularity of products that promote relaxation and indulgence, with smooth and comforting shapes and forms. Spas and whirlpool systems are the latest must-have baths, with air and water jets designed to soothe and massage your stresses away.
Bathroom fittings are remaining predominantly white, according to Ralf, with some natural shades, such as stone finishes, emerging. "However, there is a growing interest in statement pieces, such as black or patterned washbasins, which we expect will emerge in Australian bathroom trends over the next few years," he says.
Other bathroom trends tend towards concealment and streamlining, with concealed toilet cisterns remaining popular and baths being fitted flush with the surrounding tiles. "This very much reflects the cocooning trend whereby the focus is on softer forms and friendlier, calming shapes and lines," says Ralf.
Basins are remaining true to classic geometric shapes, with straight-lined design and minimalist looks popular. Ralf also recognises that there is a trend toward more environmentally conscious products. "Globally, consumers are becoming more environmentally aware and an increasing number of products are focusing on 'green' credentials," he says.
In particular, look out for easy-care finishes used on modern fittings, such as Villeroy & Boch's Ceramicplus surface finish, which has dirt-repellent qualities that reduce the need for harmful cleaning agents.
