Removing rubbish after a home renovation

Hiring a mini-skip bin has long been the usual way of disposing of waste from a home renovation. Homeowners generally load the bin themselves and then it gets picked up and sent to landfill.

However, this traditional way of dealing with renovation rubbish can be problematic for a number of reasons. Firstly, nowadays a lot of people don't have the time or inclination to load up a waste disposal unit themselves. Then, there are often issues around when the unit is being delivered and picked up, where it will be placed - sometimes you have to pay a second fee if it can only be placed on the street - and estimating how big a waste unit you'll need.

Using rubbish removal companies

There is now a trend towards engaging rubbish removal companies who can do everything for you - they remove the waste straightaway, so there's no need to have an unsightly mini-skip on your property. "We load and remove all dry waste into trucks at a convenient time for the client - an outsourced solution, in effect," says Robert from Takeaway Rubbish.

From rubbish to recycled waste

Savvier companies are also making sure they recycle renovation waste where possible, as today's environmentally aware clients are often concerned about where their waste ends up. "We try to reduce what ends up in landfill by recycling," says Rob. "We use small tip trucks to shorten the removal time and sort waste on the spot, so that as much as possible is recycled."

The renovation waste removal process

Waste that is destined for landfill is generally loaded onto the truck first, then recyclables are put on top and offloaded at various outlets before the truck heads to landfill to dump the rest.

"The benefits of the service are obvious," says Rob. "There's no labour required by the client, trucks are only on site for the duration of the load time, recycling is maximised, landfill usage is reduced."

Costs of waste removal

Takeaway Rubbish charges a cubic metre rate - that is, there is a fee for each cubic metre of waste that is loaded onto the truck. "We reduce the size of everything we can, which helps reduce the cost for the client," says Rob. Of course, there are many different pricing options out there, so make sure you shop around before making any decisions.
