Renovating a bathroom to make more space

image of bathroom productsFortunately, renovating a bathroom doesn't have to be a pain. With a bit of clever planning and a few of the latest must-have items, like twin vanities and double showers, renovating a bathroom that can be happily used by two people at the same time is on the cards.

"The first thing you need to look at when renovating a bathroom that can be used by two people is how much space you have available," says Russell Henderson from Smarter Bathrooms. "The desire now is for a more minimalist and streamlined look, so you don't want to put in twin basins if it's going to steal too much space away and make it feel crowded."

Double shower options

If space does permit, a great thing to consider installing is a double shower.

"People are now removing the bath and putting in large wet rooms with double showerheads," says Russell. "That way, two people can shower at the same time."

For a double shower to be functional, Russell recommends you have a space that's at least 1m deep and 1.5 to 1.8m long. And when selecting showerheads, try mixing things up.

"Overhead showers are great, but it also helps to have the benefit of a hand-held shower that's on a rail," says Russell. "A lot of companies have now brought out combination units."

Bathroom vanities and storage

Down at the vanity end of the bathroom, the first thing you need to reassess is your storage. Try to allocate individual storage areas so you don't encroach on each other's turf, and have a general storage area for the things you both use, like medicines and plasters.

Again, if space allows, twin basins can be a very convenient solution for couples. Alternatively, you can choose a larger vessel, like a washplane, and have two sets of taps.

"If you don't have the space for twin basins, but still want to create a workspace that two people can use at once, a good solution is to place your basin off to one side of the vanity bench, thereby creating two zones – a washing zone and a larger work zone," says Russell. "This way, one person can be brushing their teeth while the other is doing their hair or makeup."

And if you and you partner are of very different heights, consider a stepped vanity that has benchspace at varying levels.

Finally, a word on the toilet: If you don't want to snuff out any last spark of romance , try to keep some things sacred.

"I'd still try and maintain some privacy for the toilet by erecting a small nib wall or tucking it around a corner," Russell says.
