Renovating a Brisbane bathroom

Thinking of renovating your Brisbane bathroom, but not sure where to start? Prioritise your needs and use the warm climate to your advantage, says AMJ Bathrooms Director Mark Hamilton.

"Because of the warmer weather, Queenslanders are going for wet-room looks, rather than a traditional enclosed bathroom," Mark says. "For example, Brisbane bathrooms often have open shower panels, rather than an enclosed area. We don't need enclosed showers here, because any moisture in the air is quickly evaporated."

According to Mark, a growing trend in Brisbane bathroom design is floor-to-ceiling tiling. "The style at the moment is very spacious, open and modern," he says. "Large tiles are very popular for a simple yet upmarket look." And while whites and creams are still the most common bathroom tiling colours, Mark says colours such as brown and rust are increasing in popularity.

For Brisbane bathroom renovations, another way to get away from the traditional plain white bathroom is to create a feature wall, and for this Mark suggests that brighter red or rust colours work well. "The easiest way to do it is to have large plain white tiling around the bathroom and then have one feature wall of bright glass tiles," he says.

Bathroom tiles can vary greatly in price, so it's worth shopping around. But while it can be tempting to go for the cheapest option, Mark warns against this. "Tiling is not the place to try and save money in a bathroom renovation," he says. "If you choose a more expensive and better quality tile, like porcelain, it will actually save money in the long run because you won't have to retile the area every few years."

Prioritising your wants is essential when planning your bathroom renovation. Mark advises the highest priority be placed on the tiling, then the vanity, then tapwear.

And for a splash of personality, co-ordinate accessories such as towels or add some artwork to your bathroom. "The interior design of a bathroom is really important," says Mark. "If you spend time and effort on the interior design then the area becomes so much more than just a bathroom."
