For fashion-conscious Sydneysiders, bathroom renovations are about combining style with functionality. We look at ways to make modern trends work with your bathroom needs in New South Wales.
Thinking of renovating your Sydney bathroom? Combining modern trends with classical looks can increase the life of your renovation, says Shelton Bathrooms manager Lauren Burns. "Sydneysiders are very fashion-conscious people," she says. "Most people that come to me for bathroom renovations want something that's both trendy and timeless, and that can be a challenge."
According to Lauren, a growing trend in Sydney bathrooms is to get creative with lighting. "I'm increasingly seeing more lighting around mirrors, especially the backstage, fairylight-type globes set around a large, feature mirror," she says. "Having lots of smaller lights can make the space feel glamorous and sophisticated."
And lighting doesn't have to be expensive. "You can get really cheap globes and just use them to accent certain parts of the bathroom, such as around mirrors and ceiling corners," Lauren says. "My personal favourite look is to use a coloured globe in one feature lighting piece somewhere in the bathroom. It doesn't have to be too bold or garish, but a nice green or blue light can give the room a really warm feel."
A major part of any bathroom renovation is tiling, and Lauren says getting the right tiles for your needs is crucial. "The colour, shape and texture of your tiles will determine the overall look and feel of your bathroom," she says. "Plain white tiling is of course still popular, but many people are branching out into the blues, browns and even rust shades."
Another way to make your bathroom look more stylish is to use modern tapwear and fittings. "That traditional silver steel, curved-tap look is definitely becoming less popular," Lauren says. "More than ever I'm seeing people wanting the sharper, edgier, bolder taps and fixtures, and that's an easy way to completely change the feel of the room."
Most importantly, good preparation is critical in a bathroom renovation in Sydney or any other city. "The most common mistake I see is people who've started without envisaging the final, completed look," she says. "Before you rip out all your tapware and update it, you need to consider how it will fit with the rest of the space. Good planning and preparation is the best way to ensure a good end result."
