Decorating a boys bedroom can be a difficult affair, particularly once they get older and have very definite tastes. But by throwing a few sensible ideas into the mix, there are ways to get something you can both live with.

"Boys are generally avid collectors and like to show off their trophies, so include plenty of storage," she says. "Also, ensure there is lots of space where younger boys can play or older boys can lounge."

Decorating a toddler's bedroom

"You can use any colour these days, with lemon, orange or green the most common alternatives to the ever-popular blue," says Joanne. "For a contemporary look, use white and add colour with accessories such as curtains, rugs and bedding."

Joanne suggests keeping colours soft rather than bold, as softer colours reduce visual stimulation and encourage sleep. For preschoolers, friezes or wall decor based on popular characters create a fun environment, while school-age boys should have space to display their artwork or posters.

Bedrooms for tweens

As boys hit the 8-12 age group they start becoming more social. "A trundle bed or space for a blow-up mattress is essential for sleepovers, along with storage space for their sports gear and musical instruments," says Joanne.

Open shelving for trophies and collectables is a must, and a small desk can encourage good study habits for the future. "Use bright colours that reflect the vibrancy of this age group and decor that displays their interests," says Joanne.

Teenage boys' bedrooms

Teenage boys require privacy, a place to study and to entertain. "Moving them to a room away from the main traffic areas is one option, or perhaps converting the garage," says Joanne. "Rather than resorting to locks, try providing 'Do not disturb' signs for their door."

As most teenagers live in their bedrooms, study space, comfortable seating and practical, sturdy boys bedroom furniture are vital. "Carpet, upholstered furniture, wall and ceiling insulation will help to absorb excess noise," says Joanne. "A double bed, extra shelving, and lounge seating such as beanbags are also great for teen boys."    

One of the best boys bedroom ideas is important to get him involved. "Children have their own personalities, likes and dislikes," says Joanne. "By talking about what they'd like and negotiating unreasonable requests, you should be able to reach a solution that you are both happy with."
