Fun beds for kids!

The bed is the focal point for a child's bedroom, so why not have some fun with it? From car beds to fairy beds, there's plenty of scope for fun when it comes to choosing a bed for kids.

Kids love to play, and a themed bedroom or novelty child's bed can be just the thing to provide a bit of magic in a children's bedroom. Shaped beds can be the centrepiece for kids who love cars, trains, fairies or butterflies.

There are many kids beds on the market that are shaped to represent a child's favourite toy. "Kids want something that is pretty and unusual," says Cherry of Carlton Kids Beds. It's not every home that sports a car for a bed, and parents can be proud to provide a kids bed and bedroom that are slightly different.

Themed rooms for the kids

With car, fire engine or butterfly bed as the focal point for the room, you can choose to be subtle with the remaining decorations, or go all out. "One parent who loved Holdens made checkered sheets for their kid's bed; it looked fantastic," says Cherry.

"The dads get really into decorating rooms with cars. They'll often buy posters of their favourite car - whether it' a Ford or a Holden, for example, and use them to decorate the walls."

The car theme can even be continued to the floor. A quick search will reveal some great rugs that can tie in with the theme set by a novelty bed for kids - such as ones with racing tracks, so that kids can race each other with their miniature vehicles.

"Our car beds are designed for kids from one to probably six or seven - though it depends on the parent as to when they want to change the decor," says Cherry.

Abide by Australian safety regulations

Make sure that the child's bed conforms with Australian standards of safety, so that there aren't any sharp edges. "Being an Australian company, everything has to be just right. Our beds can support an adult and they're designed so that kids can't roll out," Cherry adds.

Kids from eight onwards tend to want to sleep in the same sort of bed as their parents, but this doesn't mean the end of interesting options. For older kids, a headboard can come with stars or hearts cut into it, once again suggesting options for decorating the room.

"We can do two-tone beds in these styles, where say the girl's bed is painted white on the outside, but pink on the inside slats and heart."
