Teenage bedroom ideas : Time for a makeover?

As followers of fashion, teenagers need a room that will keep up, and be versatile enough to cater to all of their needs. Luckily, there are lots of affordable and fun teenage bedroom ideas.

Who knows what teenagers want? But before you throw your hands in the air in frustration, there are lots of great and affordable things you can do to suit a teen's unique needs and tastes when it comes to their bedroom.

Clever storage solutions

We all know teenagers can be a little messy, so organising their bedroom is essential. Privacy is also very important, so clever storage solutions that give them both are a must.

Adelina Tan, IKEA Furniture's Range Leader for Children & Youth says that filing cabinets have become very popular with teens, especially as they now come in a range of bright colours and sizes to help organise schoolwork while still looking stylish.

"Smart shelving that allows teenagers to display knick-knacks, trophies and photographs is popular, while colour trends for this year are 'brights', particularly citrus and primary red and blue colours," says Adelina.

Making the space work

A lot happens in a teenager's bedroom, be it surfing the net, sleepovers with friends, studying or getting ready for school, so one of the best teenage bedroom ideas is to create a versatile room. Adelina says this can in part be achieved with a smart choice of bed. "A bed with an underbed combination is perfect for sleepovers," she says. "You can also get guest beds with storage that makes a comfy place to sit and simply folds out as a bed when friends come to stay."

Loft beds are another great way to get the most out of a teen's room, with space underneath to install a writing desk or store a spare mattress. "Laptop workstations are another good choice for teens," says Adelina. "Easily attached to the wall, these feature storage compartments and are lockable for privacy."

Versatility rules OK

As teenage tastes can quickly change, the style should be easy to update in case an emergency teenage bedroom makeover is required. "By using colourful accessories, unique lighting and changeable textiles, their room can be transformed for a bit of loose change," says Adelina. "Consider white or neutral-coloured furniture that can be matched to different accessories, for when your teen wants a fresh look."

Accessories that add a splash of colour, such as in doona covers and curtains, inexpensive lamp shades, vases and other decorative objects that can be changed simply and cheaply, will give your teen's room a fresh new look each time.
