How to find good kitchen designers

You've got a glossy-magazine vision of a beautiful kitchen in mind and a scrapbook of diligently researched ideas. But unless you find a decent designer, your dream kitchen could turn into a Gordon Ramsay-like experience.

According to Leigh Hunter, of Think Design, unless you know exactly what you need and are up to speed with the latest products and styles, a good kitchen designer is essential. The question is, how do you find one?

Word of mouth

Word of mouth is a tried and tested way to discover a good kitchen designer. "Or, if you're doing an internet search, ring a designer and chat about your project, and ask if they can give you some phone numbers of previous clients to talk to," Leigh recommends.

Being heard

Fears of having your ideas shelved or favourite colours discarded are worthy concerns when it comes to choosing a professional. "It's essential to be guided by someone you are comfortable with," Leigh urges. "Good kitchen designers will listen to your ideas and incorporate them into the design, as well as suggesting new ideas."

Types of kitchen designers

Different types of kitchen designers are worth noting, too. Like architects, independent designers charge a fee and concentrate on designing for your requirements and budget. "Designers from kitchen companies usually operate on a commission basis and may try to influence you to buy their products," Leigh explains.

Ensure that the person you choose will listen to your needs and ideas rather than trying to pressure you into buying things you don't want. "Definitely steer clear of anyone who tries to push only one product, rather than present a variety of options," says Leigh. 

Insist on qualifications 

Last but not least, ensure that you use a certified kitchen designer. "A certified kitchen designer is one who has worked in the industry for at least four years, has undertaken an extensive training course and passed the relevant industry exams," Leigh explains.

Choose a good kitchen designer and you'll silently thank them every time you dish up a new delicacy.
