You don't need an unlimited budget to give your kitchen a lift – but creativity and an open mind will do wonders. Here are some simple kitchen decorating ideas that won't break the bank or require a big renovation.
Deciding against a major kitchen renovation might be a relief – until you realise your dreary kitchen is still in desperate need of a new look. Interior designer Fay Cooper of Cooper Robinson Interiors says there are plenty of ways to freshen a space with some touch-ups and fresh kitchen decorations - and without undertaking a major overhaul.
"First, declutter the benchtops and set the scene for a streamlined look – this will add to the overall effect," Fay advises. That means finding an alternative home for your teapot, mobile charger, pens and other bits and pieces.
If the prospect of hiding your kettle and toaster is too much to fathom, consider buying new, streamlined models that are easier on the eye. A new microwave is another good idea; they have reduced in size and price considerably.
For those planning to redecorate in the kitchen, new splashbacks are usually near the top of the wish list. Using interesting tiles, plain glass or wallpaper behind a glass splashback are all options that will deliver an instant lift and cause minimum disruption.
Simple fixes that make a big difference include repainting cabinetry and replacing handles. "For a contemporary look, choose one or two glass-fronted cabinet doors with framed wood to match the other cabinets," Fay suggests. "Add some glass shelves and downlights and a new rangehood in brushed metal and glass if your budget allows."
Window furnishings are another 'make or break' kitchen decor item in terms of overall look. "Remove fussy curtains and replace with smart, understated blinds," Fay recommends. "Use roller, sheer, UV or blockout blinds individually or together, or dual brackets with matching or brushed metal base rails."
When it comes to kitchen decorating, simply framed artwork in the way of large vintage posters and brightly coloured holders for cookbooks and telephone directories lend a creative touch to the space. A row of same-sized pots and pot plants, such as shiny black glazed pots with matching green or coloured cacti, is another way to create impact with affordable kitchen decorations and accessories.
And don't forget the details, says Fay. "Buy smart tea towels and hand towels, and take a fresh look at light fittings," she says. "Hanging two or three drum shades over the bench in plain, coloured or patterned fabric is a great way to highlight the workspace and add ambience."
