When it comes to kitchen storage solutions and making it work in your home, it's not so much size that counts, but how well you use what you have.

In fact, a smallish serve of well-designed storage can easily outplay a kitchen that has ample cupboards and drawers, but not a single system in sight.

Think about your kitchen pantry

While an ideal food cupboard should be at least 90cm wide and around 65cm deep, don't panic if your kitchen can't - or doesn't - accommodate that. Why? Because a well-designed pantry system can come to the rescue.

"Companies like Hettich and Hafele have revolutionised pantry design," says Michael Smith from Servoplan Kitchens. "Traditional pantries with static shelves mean that not only are things at the back really hard to reach, there's also a lot of wasted space. A pantry system with pull-out shelves and drawers means that every inch of space can be utilised."

'Smart' systems mean that traditional kitchen cupboards and drawers get a similar treatment. "Rather than shelves that are permanently locked into place, smart cupboards feature everything from pull-out drawers and bins to revolving shelves that work much like a lazy susan to make corner cupboards - a well-known dead space in any kitchen - very user friendly," says Michael.

Another tip for making a space-challenged kitchen more workable: think about incorporating features that can be used for more than one thing. "Pyrolave is a brand that's well known in the kitchen world for producing beautiful, functional worktops, but they've recently released a new product that allows an induction unit that you can cook on to be integrated directly into the benchtop," says Michael.

"Not only is it hygienic because there aren't any grooves or ridges for food to get trapped in, but when the induction unit isn't in use, the area doubles as a normal benchtop." Perfect for a space-challenged kitchen.
