Small kitchen ideas from big dreams

If you have a small kitchen, don't think limitations, think possibilities! All it takes is a lateral approach and a professional who's in the know with small kitchen ideas.

Most of us have experienced the frustration of cooking in a cramped space. And no, we're not referring to camping holidays. A small kitchen will benefit from careful planning, good use of finishes and, of course, strong design.

Design

Kitchen designer Ann Gillis of Ann Gillis Design says there are several ways to achieve a functional and efficient kitchen layout in a small space. "Bench-level windows are desirable, as they make the room appear bigger," she explains. "On windowless walls, try and use as much vertical storage as possible."

Opting for a wall oven with wide drawers under the cooktop will maximise space, suggests Ann. "Also, incorporate an undermount or slide-out rangehood, as canopy ranges tend to overpower small kitchens," she says.

If you have a stone or solid benchtop, a double undermount sink with removable drain board can be handy. "They add to the bench area and sense of overall space," Ann explains. "If a double sink isn't feasible, you may opt for a one-and-a-half sink or drop-in sink for a laminate benchtop."

Raised bars are best avoided in small kitchens, as they create a 'closed-in' feel, and island benches often don't work. If you must have one, careful positioning is paramount to ensure it doesn't impede the walkway or access to the dishwasher.

Storage

In small kitchen designs, good storage is essential and overhead cupboards are desirable. "Take them as comfortably high as possible to maximise storage," Ann recommends. "There's a variety of options for internal cupboard storage, even for one-door pantries, including drawer and slide-out systems and pull-out wire shelving."

As most pantry items are small, the condensed storage offered by these systems means there's no wasted space, Ann reveals. One of the best small kitchen ideas is to install as many drawers as possible; wide drawers are the most cost effective and space efficient.

Finishes

Ann's approach to small kitchen renovation is 'keep it light and bright'. "Your kitchen needs to reflect your personal taste, but try and choose a light benchtop," she suggests. "Gloss finishes on benches and cabinets are ideal, as their reflective properties give the illusion of light and space."

For those with polished timber floors, she suggests including a brushed aluminium kickboard. "This will provide a 'floating' effect and increase the sense of space," says Ann.

Other tips

Small kitchens will benefit from a big decluttering. Instantly increase benchtop space by rehousing items like knife blocks, gadgets and spice racks. Also, go through your pots, pans and small appliances and give any rarely used items to charity.

A small kitchen requires some lateral thinking, so it's best to get a kitchen professional on board. Find a kitchen renovator in your area:
