A cosy home has snuggle appeal

Having more than enough room to swing a cat can be a luxurious problem, but less-than-perfect decor and layout can leave a room looking (and feeling) stark and uninviting. Here's how to achieve a cosy home with good interior design in large spaces.

Colours

Decorating an interior with darker hues can make a space seem smaller, that doesn't mean you should automatically paint a large room with the darkest colour you can find in the hope that it'll create a sense of cosiness. Instead, opt for a warm neutral colour for most of the walls and paint a single wall in a rich hue that has the same base tint as the neutral you've chosen. According to the interior decorators, feature walls work best if you choose a wall that's as uncluttered as possible, so avoid those that already have architectural features like windows and doors.

Lighting

Dot the room with a few table and standard lamps, which give off a subtle glow and, where possible, use them instead of the overhead variety. Having different light sources within the room will give a number of points of interest, as well as a feeling of warmth and a dose of cosy home vibes.

Zones

If your room is large enough to take it, consider creating different spaces within the same four walls. An over-sized living room will look instantly cosier if you create two entertaining or relaxing areas simply by being canny with the way you configure your furniture and floor coverings.

Artworks

Having a surplus of space is a good excuse to put some art on your walls - as if having beautiful paintings to look at wasn't reason enough! Buy the work of a local artist, buy an inexpensive fine art print and have it framed, or create your own work of art with a blank canvas and coloured paints (matching your decor, of course).

How can an interior decorator help me?

A professional with experience in decorating interiors will be able to share creative and practical design skills with you. While you may be able to create a space with your own 'stamp' on it, interior decorators can offer advice on a particular aesthetic to suit your style, as well as interior decorating trends, safety, maintenance and overall balance in your living space.
