Affordable living room furniture for bargain hunters

It's not hard in this day and age to find affordable living-room furniture to suit any taste and budget. There's a wide range of affordable furniture options, from do-it-yourself assembly to living-room sets and packages.

When you're on a budget it's not hard to find living-room furniture of reasonable quality to suit almost any taste. With choices ranging from the modern of IKEA to the more generic stylings of Freedom or the ever-growing range of Balinese imported items, there is a wide range of affordable living room furniture to suit any home.

Ian Ferguson, General Manager of Berkowitz Furniture, says that today you can get anything and in any combination. "No matter what you want, be it a corner suite, a pair of sofas, a chaise, ottomans, matching chairs, anything, you can get it," he says.

According to Ian, what is particularly popular at the moment is the sleeker look of square-armed sofas. "No one really wants the bigger, rounded arms that used to be everywhere," he says. "And in colours, right now it's all brown, beige, black and sometimes a bit of red."

Cost of living room furniture

When it comes to the cost of furniture, Ian likens it to the length of a piece of string. "It's so dependent on what you're looking for and your lifestyle - if you have children or not, and your age - but for a pair of good-quality sofas, it's not unreasonable to start at around $3000," he says.

Stylish and affordable living room furniture

There are now lots of places to find quality furniture at even more affordable prices. At Swedish retail giant IKEA, two-seater lounges start around the $149 mark, although you will need to assemble them yourself. A number of discount furniture stores offer two-seater lounges for as little as $200.

Just because you're on a budget doesn't mean that style is out of your reach. Popular looks at the moment include modular lounge suites and three-seater chaise lounges with one 'longer' side, which are also available at the affordable end of the scale.

Living room sets and packages

Furniture packages are also a great way to get all of your living-room pieces at once, and offer a significant saving on purchasing individual items. The only drawback is the limitation of styles and colours available, as you won't be able to freely mix and match.

The most common living room furniture set or package is two sofas, usually a two-seater and a three-seater. At the cheaper end, these can start from as little as $900, which is great value, considering a good-quality two-seater couch can often cost the same.

More elaborate furniture packages are available in almost any configuration, from two-seater couch, armchair and ottoman to a complete living-room package featuring couches, a coffee table and lamp tables. The latter furniture set will cost around $800 and is a great - and affordable - way to decorate an entire living room.
