It's natural to want your sleeping quarters to be as appealing as possible, so if your bedroom seems a bit tired or old-fashioned and you want to give it a more up-to-date look, take a look at modern bedroom furniture.
The centrepiece of any bedroom is, of course, the bed, and Jeff Doell of bed and bedroom furniture retailers Rise & Shine has noticed some distinct trends emerging in this area. "Leather upholstered beds have been popular for a few years now and are still hot at the moment," he says.
In fact, all kinds of upholstered beds are selling well, especially those that can be modified to customers' requirements. Modern, oversized bedheads are also popular, as are low-lying beds with surrounding panels.
With the increase in apartment living, many people are looking for extra storage options in bedrooms that may be small or oddly shaped. "Under-bed storage such as lift-up beds, or under-bed drawers, are very popular," says Jeff. "People are also looking to customise their bedrooms with unique colours and fabrics."
When it comes to tall boys (tall, narrow chests of drawers), squared-off, modern designs are currently the main choice for most customers. "In terms of colour, while chocolate is still very popular, the new hot colour is cocoa or latte, which is a little lighter and more elegant," says Jeff.
A modern look is also popular for bedside tables. The big sellers include tables that are low and square and whose designs are reminiscent of traditional modernist furniture. Often these tables will have beautiful or unusual handles, and they frequently feature two main drawers with a very small drawer at the top for knick-knacks.
Today's fashionable bedroom lamps are very creatively designed and often quite experimental. Such lamps can add a great deal of character to a bedroom and are being chosen by more and more customers. There are lamps combining traditional shades and modern metal bases that feature recurring geometric motifs, ones that feature an asymmetrical 'fairy floss' mass of glass around a central bulb, and 'space age' lamps with bulbous glass shades and tripod-style bases.
