Your bedroom makeovers should be your sanctuary - after all, you spend a third of your life asleep. A redesigned bedroom can help to create a fresh start in life and enhance intimate moments when you're taking time out.
You can develop a new theme by designing around a cherished wardrobe or favourite piece of bedroom furniture, or start from scratch with only a colour in mind. Latest trends point towards a restrained, tailored look, or a sumptuous elegance with ornate bursts of colour.
Many interior designers are moving away from traditional bedheads towards upholstered wall panels, shaped and padded bedheads, or featured strips of wallpaper. Heather McNeill of In Vogue Interiors suggests matching the upholstery at the head with that of an ottoman at the foot of the bed, especially in larger rooms.
With preference moving towards ones that reach past the mattress. "You can have it as a throw or with tailored corners, then add a quilted bed valance for a more tailored look," McNeill says.
Layers and textures are the look of the season. "Cotton quilted prints look great with a textured bedhead and valance," McNeill advises. Bold floral designs or beaded silk throws and matching cushions work with mink blankets to create a luxurious boudoir feel, while a pared-back design can use tailored, striped covers and thick woollen or mohair blankets.
The best technique is to start with neutral coloured sheets, then build upwards. Charcoals and light coffee colours are also a good way to strike a balance. Add impulsive colour in your pillowcases, soft cushions, lampshades or even a feature piece of furniture.
The wallpaper can also add a splash, or for the refined style, a simple line of red piping on checked pillowcases and doona covers will suffice. If you're unsure what will work in your room, an interior designer will be able to help you settle on a style.
The bottom curtains or blind should be sheer. "It creates privacy and adds romance to the room," McNeill says. The soft lighting that results can then be highlighted with well-designed bedside lights.
These should compliment your chosen style lush bedrooms can benefit from crystal bases and bold lampshade designs, while a strong geometric shape will suit the restrained bedroom look.
Your bedroom should clearly show your passions, so make confident choices that encourage comfort and intimacy to create a palace of dreams.
