Carpet steam cleaners for peace of mind

Maintain the look and health of your floor coverings by having professional carpet steam cleaners dry or steam clean it on a regular basis.

Mark Stachnik of national company Drymaster Carpet Cleaning says that most professional carpet steam cleaners should offer both methods. "Professional carpet steam cleaners would need to inspect your carpet first and then recommend the best cleaning method.

"This will depend on a few factors, such as whether it's wool carpet or nylon carpet, or a mix of both; how heavy the carpet is; the type of soiling involved; and when it was last cleaned."

What carpet cleaning style would suit my floors?

According to Mark, if you have wool carpet, generally steam cleaning is best. Although dry cleaning is a good alternative for synthetic carpets, it does not clean wool carpet as thoroughly.

"Steam cleaning is also recommended if your carpet hasn't been cleaned for a while," says Mark. "It is ideal to steam clean your carpet once every 12 months, in summer, and maybe have a dry clean in between in the winter months."

How do carpet steam cleaners work?

Steam cleaning uses a hot water extraction method, and if done properly, should take between one and eight hours to dry. "When the job is finished it should be touch dry, not soggy or saturated," says Mark.

The products that carpet steam cleaners use are also important. "For wool carpets especially, the products used should be certified by WoolSafe," says Mark. "WoolSafe is a worldwide accreditation program for cleaning and maintenance products suitable for wool and other fibres."

Can carpet cleaners maintain lounges and floor tiles?

In addition to carpet cleaning, many professional carpet steam cleaners also offer services for cleaning fabric lounge suites, leather lounges, and tiles and grout. "Fabric is strictly steam cleaned, but to do it properly a 'dry master tool' is used," Mark says.

"This leaves the fabric very dry, as it uses minimal amounts of water and lots of suction. Again, it then takes between one and eight hours to totally dry."
