A pool room is a wonderful space for entertaining family and friends. With a good atmosphere, great music and a bunch of games to play, the space can bring families together, as well as make a home a hive of entertainment.
To create an effective pool room, the space must be big enough to hold a pool table and take tricky shots.
"For an eight foot by four foot table, the pool room must be 5.4 metres wide and 4.2 metres long at the very least," says Rob Vudrag from Quedos Billiard Tables. "That will allow anyone to play any conceivable shot that they can think of."
Though an eight-foot table is an average size, tables can be built seven, eight, nine, 10 and 12 feet in length. The width is always half the length.
What kind of pool room do you want?
When choosing a table for you pool room it is important to distinguish what you will use it for. Are you searching for a regular table on a comfortable budget, or a beautiful piece of designer furniture?
A bottom-range table will be made out of timber components, with cushions in jarrah or pine, and the remaining structure made from stained pine.
As the price rises, more solid timber is used and designs are more intricate, and there are also designer ranges available, which add sophistication to your pool room.
Lighting your pool room
The ambience of your pool room is important for enjoying the game. "The best lighting for a table is a fluorescent canopy, but they're pretty ugly and bulky," Rob says. "You can use pretty much any lighting as long as it's reasonably even over the pool table."
To keep the ambient feel, lighting should drop off towards the outer areas of the pool room. "Soft light is the key," Rob says. If you have a bar in the room, lights bouncing off the glasses can create a stylish effect.
"I've seen some great pool rooms in my time," Rob says. "They often have a nice bar, dartboard, pinball tables – it just depends on how far you want to take it."
