Fireplace pellet stoves are green heating machines

Pellet heaters, also known as fireplace pellet stoves, are gaining popularity in Australia - but how do you know which type is best for your home? Here's a comparative review of some of the most well-known pellet stoves to help you decide.

They're safe, energy efficient and environmentally friendly – it's no wonder pellet stoves are becoming a popular home heating option. But how do you decide which pellet stove is right for you?

Manager of Pellet Heaters Australia, Rod Bailey, says pellet heaters can be classified into two general types, depending on the amount of heat they generate. High-output heaters such as the EF3 Bi can produce up to 11.7 kilowatts of heat, while the low-output EF2 can produce only 10 kilowatts.

The EF2/EFi pellet stove

"While traditional in design, EF2 pellet heaters have modern features to suit most home interiors," Rod says. "It's available in freestanding and fireplace-insert models and comes with a covered control panel, firebox brick lining and decorative louvres that hide a heat exchanger."

Various options allow you to adapt the model to your personal taste, such as choosing a 24-carat gold door or top. Another optional extra is an ignitor kit, which allows you to create instant warmth. The standard cost is $1459, while installation will set you back another $400 to $500. If you're after an electrical ignition and gold door, you can expect to pay up to $1776.

The EF3 Bi pellet stove

"This model of fireplace pellet stove produces the most heat, is more efficient and its design adds a touch of elegance to your home," Rod says. "The three-piece bay glass door offers a good view of the fire, while the flame patterns provide perfect ambience on cold winter nights."

Unlike the EF2, this model offers a fully automatic ignition system as a standard feature and is available in freestanding and fireplace-insert models. The standard model costs $2938 and an optional gold door will see the price rise to $3085. Installation costs will generally be the same as for the EF2, around $400-500.

Side by side

While both fireplace pellet stove models feature a large hopper lid for easy access, similar capacities and attractive looks, the main differences are the ease of use, efficiency and the heat output. The EF2 is a more basic model, while the EF3 provides a little more luxury, with a price tag to match.

According to Rod, 20 kilograms of pellet fuel in either type of heater will last about 34 hours with the heater on Low. "Obviously, heating capacity depends on the design of the home, but the EF3 Bi will heat a larger area than the EF2," he says.

Keep in mind that tricky installation of pellet heaters, such as those with long flues that need to go around walls and chimneys, can also add to the expense. To see the range of pellet stove designs available, search for a pellet stove dealer in your area:
