Decor ideas for off-the-wall designs

According to Roger Ward of Richard & Roger Design, there is no end to what you can do, and you don't have to spend up big to do it.

"There are some great things out there you can decorate walls with," he says. "All you need to do is let your inner creative self have a go.

"For example, there are lots of faux animal heads now available. My favourites are the ones made out of chicken wire. But if you're on a tight budget, look out for cow heads made out of plastic two-litre bottles - they're a great laugh."

If you like wall pieces, but want something a bit more interesting than your standard print, consider stretching a linen tea towel over a frame. "There are some really interesting and unusual prints out there," says Roger. "For instance, a Melbourne-based company does some amazing limited-edition prints by Australian artists, so you know that you're not going to be seeing it on your neighbour's wall."

Traditional wallpaper designs

Roger also suggests looking at wallpapers. "There are lots of amazing wallpapers out there that are art in themselves.

"With (late Australian wallpaper designer) Florence Broadhurst back in fashion, the resurgence of traditional wallpaper designs by (19th-century designer) William Morris, and lots of retro designs available, all you need are decorative frames and you can create your own artwork."

Even more decor ideas for the home

Another idea Roger says will bring colour, warmth and a lot of fun to your home interior are Fuzzy Felt pictures. "You can have a great time with Fuzzy Felt art," explains Roger. "You don't even have to be too crafty to cut out a few shapes and frame them. You can easily do a series, which could look great going up a stairway or in the bedrooms."

Sourcing out decor options in retro shops is always worth it. There are lots of things to be found - from oversized letters to 50s prints of Tahitian princesses, while a collection of the old gilt frames and mirrors often found in charity shops can give a wall an interesting lift.

"It's lots of fun to get out there and find great things to put on your walls," says Roger. "Whether you do it yourself, like making a mobile out of seashells you've collected or buying a stick-on chalk board in the shape of a giraffe, there are lots of ways to decorate without breaking the bank. Just let yourself go with it!"
