Modern door handles for the home

Whether you're building a new home, renovating or just wanting to give the old place a makeover, door handles are a simple way to say a lot.

Choose the right door handles for your home

There are many door handles available on the market today and no matter what your preferred style, there's likely to be an option right for you. Brent Grigg of Elite Door and Tap Hardware says that although contemporary handle designs are hot right now, there is still a big market for traditional handles, sometimes even blends of the two.
"It really depends on the style of the house, but when you're looking around, it's worth asking lots of questions to make sure you get the ones right for you," he says.
"For example, if you have a traditional home design, but are doing a modern renovation and want a handle that works throughout the old and new sections, you can get old-fashioned handles with a more contemporary chrome finish, or satin, rather than the typical brass."

Modern designer door handles

There are an even greater variety of styles and sizes for you to choose from, with the modern 'rose' - door handles with a back plate - also available in many unorthodox shapes.
For example, renowned French designer Philippe Starke - who has built his reputation on turning mundane household items into pieces of art in their own right - has inspired a whole new approach to door hardware with his own avant-garde designs.
As with most top-end designer trends, you can expect this look to filter down into the mid-range markets soon.

Mix and match door fittings

These days, matching modern door handles with the design of your other furnishings and fittings is also much easier. Look out for architectural door hardware companies that offer not only door fittings, but also tapware and interior cabinetry all designed around the same theme for sleek consistency throughout the home. These also come in a range of door finishes, from traditional brass to modern, powder-coated chrome.
As for practical considerations like door locks, while you'll need to buy these separately, it is certainly possible to get locks that complement the design of your handles.
