Whether you're moving house, going away for a while or just have lots of stuff and no space, then putting your furniture in storage might be the answer.
Secure, weather-resistant and relatively cheap, offsite furniture storage is a much safer option than the backyard shed or a mate's spare bedroom.
"You can either use a self-storage facility or choose to have what we call a homepack," says Jade MacKay of Dawson Removals and Storage.
"With self-storage you rent a secure unit, which only you have access to, but can visit whenever it suits you, while a homepack offers a long term furniture storage option.
“Your items are collected and then stored in a box that is made up on site, and kept in a warehouse. To get access to a homepack you would need to give a few days notice."
There are many different types of storage companies available. Many offer just self-storage, while some are run by furniture removal companies that can also offer wider services such as picking up and packing for self-storage.
"The idea is to make it as easy as possible for the customer, so your items can be collected or you can bring them in yourself," says Jade. "If anything needs to be wrapped or packaged it can be done for you, or if you prefer, materials for packaging can be supplied for you to do it yourself."
Some self-storage facilities have all-hours access, and most have a range of security measures that may include keypad codes, personal keys and 24-hour surveillance to ensure that there are no unwanted visitors getting into your facility.
To be really safe, most companies also offer storage insurance. The popular choices offered are a full-risk cover for people who need to have items collected, held and later delivered, while fire and flood coverage comes standard for most self-storage customers.
The cost of storage varies depending on the amount of space required, but most companies will invoice on a monthly basis, including insurance if you choose to have it.
