Get fit with a swim spa

Pool SpaWhether you're a spa fan who would like to add an element of fitness to your routine, or an avid swimmer seeking effective relaxation, swim spas have got it covered.

Swim spas are an all-rounder package that allow bathers to swim continuously against a current before settling into soothing spa bubble jets when they're done.

Swimming pool and spa all in one

Coming in different shapes and sizes, the swim spa pool is often spacious enough for a whole family to enjoy at once. "Kids can splash and stroke in the current end, while the adults relax in the seating end," explains Andrew Pullen of Spa World. "This is a fun and relaxing way to spend family time."

Swim spas are also favoured by fitness fanatics. The continuous stream of resistance allows for a structured swim workout. These streams can often be adjusted to suit different swimming strokes or levels of intensity.

"In our stores we sell swim spas to people who are very health conscious and want to keep fit with regular swimming exercise," says Steve Dempsey of Splashes Spa World. "Swim spas are popular because they can be used all year round, and combine the hydrotherapy features of a spa with all the health benefits of a swimming pool."

Going eco-friendly

Swim spas are also keeping up with the times as far as eco-friendliness goes. Endless Spas, which produced Australia's first swim spa, offers the only swim spa models on the market that use salt-water chlorination. This cuts back on chemicals and other equipment needed to maintain traditionally chlorinated water, providing a more natural swim that's also kind to the environment.

Spa World stocks the popular Monarch range of swim spas, which has developed an alternative sanitisation process to the usual chlorine options. Using an ultra-violet treatment, the system naturally clarifies the water, removing micro-organisms without the harsh chemicals that can do damage to skin and the environment.

Easy pool installation

Swim spas are sold as a package and, because all functions are complete in the one unit, installation is a relatively no-fuss procedure. A professional will probably be required to fit and set up the swim spa unit, but the costs involved are a great deal lower than those of a large pool.

If the swim spa unit is installed into the ground, the usual excavation costs are involved, as well as electrical and pump set-ups. However, portable swim spas that sit above the ground may only require some electrical expertise, keeping costs to a minimum.
