Pool accessories can range from the simple to the sophisticated, says David Lloyd, managing director of International Quadratics in Padstow, New South Wales. But with a vast range of products on the market, he warns consumers not to be blinded by the options.

"When you purchase a swimming pool, the pool builder will try to sell you a range of add-ons, including heating, pool cleaners, water features, pool covers, hand rails, lights, pool toys, and even underwater speakers," says David. "It's important not to go over your planned budget."

According to David, some of the hottest pool accessories of the moment are those that address the environmental impact of owning a pool. "Water- and energy-saving accessories are very popular right now, due to the current issues with greenhouse gases and the environment," he says. "Products such as pool covers and water diverters are hot on the agenda."

Opting for a solar water heater is one way to cut your carbon dioxide emissions, allowing you to enjoy a warm pool without the guilt, and lowering your energy bill in the process. Plus, by installing a solar water heater, you may be entitled to a state government rebate.

Other popular pool accessories such as water diverters save water by channelling rain from your roof into your pool, keeping it topped up. Thermal pool covers are a great way to help keep the heat in and prevent evaporation.

Think before purchasing pool items

When purchasing swimming pool accessories, David advises that consumers need to consider the quality, warranty and value for money, as too often they purchase products that are not suited to their needs.

"For example, a thermal pool cover won't work for a pool with a leaf problem," he says. "Mesh leaf covers are specifically designed for this problem, or you could have a leaf cover over a thermal cover and satisfy both needs."
