Soak up lap swimming pools

Although the standard size is about 12.5m by 2m, one-quarter of an Olympic pool, concrete lap pools can be tailor designed for any yard. Executive manager of Blue Haven Pools Remonda Martinez says the space required for a lap pool depends on council boundary set-back requirements.

"If you don't have much space you can always reduce the size of the pool and add a swim jet. The jet system is installed at one end of the mould during the concrete pour of the pool and is fully adjustable for children through to strong swimmers."

Some above-ground lap swimming pools are fully portable

Great if you're planning on moving house. Lockable hard covers may also negate the need for a fence in some council districts.

In-ground lap pools are available in fibreglass and concrete. Fibreglass comes as a pre-fabricated mould with only a few different sizes, but they are quick to install, have a smooth interior and are easy to maintain.

Concrete versions are more flexible in design and internal finishes. "Adding a spa or wading area is possible with concrete, as it's custom built to your site," explains Remonda. "A true day spa feel can be achieved with the addition of both a sauna and spa."

Swimming pool heating

In terms of heating, gas heating is most comfortable for the serious lap-pool swimmer, who is more likely to exercise in cooler parts of the day.

However, coupling a gas heater with a solar system could reduce your gas bill by 50 per cent. Building your pool in a sunny area and using a solar blanket to retain heat will also help reduce heating costs.

Latest design trends are tiled bands through the middle of the pool and even diving blocks. Placing steps in the middle of the pool rather than at the ends is an important design tip to avoid hitting your head while doing tuck-dives.

Other trends include mirrored retaining walls so you can see yourself as you swim, fully tiled or micro-pebbled interiors for a smooth and easy-to-maintain finish.

Add some fibre-optic perimeter lighting or a fibre-optic sheer-descent waterfall and you'll be fully immersed in the lap of luxury.
