Swim jets for endless pool exercise

1. What is a swim jet?

Swim jets (also known as endless swims or swim spas) provide a resistant current to swim against, much like a treadmill in the water.

2. Who uses swimming pool jets?

Swim jets are great for people who love to keep fit in the water but just can't spare the room for a lengthy lap pool.

3. How much room do you need in a pool?

To get the best out of a swim jet, a minimum length of three metres is required. This should allow enough room for the stream, your body and a bit of flailing about.

4. What's involved in their set-up?

The swim jet must be accompanied by a swim-jet pump and these are usually sold as a package. You'll also need a power supply for the pump and a large PVC pipe (60-88mm diameter) to handle the large flow rates of water. A couple of valves on the piping will make servicing the pump a lot easier.

5. How many bubbles?

It is possible to change the size and intensity of the bubbles in your jet stream. Some swimmers find the jets piercing on the skin and like to tone them down. Others like bigger bubbles that allow more air into their swimming workout.

6. When is the best time to install an endless swim spa?

While swim jets can be added at any time, installing them at the time of construction is preferable. This will ensure you get the right pump properly installed for your particular pool. While adding one to an existing pool is possible, the plumbing may be costly, complicated and not at its optimum efficiency.
