A kit pool provides potential pool owners with the freedom to install or oversee the installation of their new backyard addition. However, while there are many advantages to purchasing a kit pool, there are also some technicalities to consider.
Dennis Faulkner of Waterside Pools supplies a wide range of kit pool packages. "We sell both above-ground and in-ground fibreglass pools," he says. There are a few options in pool styles, with various shapes and materials to choose from, including fibreglass for the in-ground models.
A kit pool package usually includes the pool shell, pump, filter, chlorinator (if you're after a saltwater pool) or other choice of sanitiser. Other features that may come with the kit include start-up chemicals (chlorine, acid and pH buffer) or cleaning accessories.

"For the inexperienced installer, labour is going to be the biggest cost associated with a kit pool," informs Dennis. "If you go through a reputable installer, you can avoid the hassle of finding individual contractors to do the paving, fencing, concreting and electrics. Plus you're assured of getting high-quality equipment and workmanship."
Installation
Experienced builders or competent handymen may feel confident in setting up the kit pool themselves, but for those who like a bit of additional assurance, hiring a professional installer may be worth the extra cash in the long run. Engaging the services of a licensed builder should also ensure a seven-year installation warranty for ongoing peace of mind.
But that's not to say you can't do it yourself – after all, that's what buying a kit pool is all about. Dennis has seen enough home installation disasters to know what pool owners should be wary of and he is happy to guide his customers through the process if they wish to take the DIY approach.
"Buy the best equipment, buy a kit pool from a reputable dealer and get the right advice throughout the process," he says. "We supply a lot of information to our clients, and help through the installation process."
A kit pool provides a great opportunity for those who want to maintain a level of control over the installation of their new pool. Just make sure you are well informed and use skilled tradies to avoid some costly repair work a few years down the track.
