Using swimming pool heating systems

Sunbather Pool Technologies' Tom Boadle says two of the most energy-efficient products for heating are solar energy and pool covers. "Eighty to 90 per cent of people choose solar energy to heat their pools," he says. "A solar heater will be all the heating you need for the months of November through to March or April.

Throw the pool heating timer away!

As solar heating works solely from the sun, Tom says the use of a timer is impractical. "The timer may be on yet it could be raining  an easy way to waste electricity. A far more energy efficient option is using a temperature-sensing controller, which will operate the system only when heat can be gained."

Most heat loss occurs at the surface, where the water is exposed to wind and cold, but much of this can be eliminated with a cover. The types of covers - bubble or solar covers, thermal blankets and slat-covers - vary in heat retention according to price. But the real key to their effectiveness is diligently using one.

"If you're using a gas heater, a pool cover will reduce your heating bill to a third, as the running time is reduced," Tom says. "Pool covers pay for themselves over and over - especially with gas and heat pumps, because the running costs are high."

Heat pumps are new to the swimming pool market

While no more expensive than gas to run, the pump is more expensive at the outset and theres a slower heat-up time. Heat pumps are especially used in country areas where no mains gas is available. On continuously, they run at about a third of the cost of LPG.

When selecting a heater, consider the size of the pool and/or spa, the maximum temperature you want and how long youre willing to wait for it to heat up. Also ask, "Do I want to swim year round or just extend the season?" Keen swimmers in cooler climates are wise to heat their pool continuously - especially with gas heating, as the expense lies in the initial heat-up.

Whatever heating option youre considering, decide in the concept stage of your pool. It is too late to decide you want an automated slat-cover once the pools in, and later adjustments to plumbing, like installing a gas line, can be costly.
