Architects for a home

Q. What should someone look for in choosing an architect?

A. A referral from a friend with similar home design style is a good idea, as is choosing an architect with experience in the type of design you need, for example a beach house. Ask to meet them face to face so you can view their folio, check their fees and availability and make sure you get along well.

Q. How can people save on home renovation projects?

A. Leave the existing house as intact as possible, as it's very expensive to renovate old rooms in the home. Try to anticipate problems beforehand and design around them. Keep in mind that the cost per square metre of a small project will likely be higher than a larger-size one, due to the economy of scale.

Q. What's the biggest budget blow-out in renovations?

A. Costs associated with the existing structure such as rectifying crooked and uneven walls, ceilings and floors. Most can be avoided with investigation of the structure and finishes and budget allowances plus about 15 per cent contingency for undiscovered items and 10 per cent for cost increases.

Q. What advice do you have for people budgeting for their renovation?

A. Include costs of each item after thorough investigation and allow for fees e.g. planning and building permits, soil tests and structural engineer, if required. Use an experienced architect for the design and documentation to help anticipate the types of problems associated with home styles and ages.

Q. How can using an architect save you money on your renovations?

A. By designing a site-specific, tailor-made plan, which will avoid wasted space, and providing detailed documents that will avoid variations and extras on the contract. He or she will also be able to set you up with the most suitable builder for your particular type of design and construction.

Q. What does it take to be an architect?

A. At most Australian universities the course is five years. Some require 12 months experience in an architect's office before graduation.
