Chris Lamont, Housing Industry Association Chief Executive, gives us some insights into the Association and the building industry in Australia: its policies, green-ness and role in helping customers.

What does the HIA do?

As the country's largest residential building organisation, HIA is the voice of the Australian home building industry. Members include builders, design professionals, kitchen and bathroom specialists, trade contractors, manufacturers and suppliers, solicitors and accountants. We develop policy aimed at restoring housing affordability, reducing red tape in business and ensuring that all sectors of the industry are considered in governmental decision making.

What is your particular role within the Housing Industry Association?

I'm the Chief Executive (of) Policy, responsible for working with HIA members and staff to support the housing industry and improve housing affordability for the nation. Last year saw a number of significant achievements, including development of the new government's election commitments in respect to housing policies. I am now providing advice and assistance in the implementation of these and other policies.

Who is on the policy team?

The HIA policy team comprises qualified professionals who have substantial experience in government, building, economics, media and the legal profession.

Does HIA have any 'green' policies?

HIA GreenSmart focuses on educating builders, designers, product manufacturers and consumers about the benefits of environmentally responsible housing. It's a voluntary program aimed at finding ways to conserve natural resources through environmentally responsible housing, improving the energy and water efficiency of new and existing housing, and addressing the operational energy and water use of all housing.

What are some other key HIA policies?

HIA's key policies include maintaining housing supply and affordability, streamlining small business operations, improving industrial relations, reducing duplication and unnecessary planning, building and workplace safety regulations, and addressing skill shortages that prevail across the country.

Does HIA provide any resources or advice to people wanting to build a new home?

Through the HIA Home Ideas Centres, event nights, publications, product displays and related initiatives, HIA provides a range of information to assist consumers. The HIA Home Ideas Centres provide invaluable assistance for anyone building or renovating - I should know; I'm building a new home at the moment and I'm a frequent visitor.
