Plants and watering restrictions around the backyard

image of damien webberThe current watering restrictions around Australia have become commonplace, with most states implementing water-saving strategies to ensure the longevity of supplies.

So how can you find the right plants to ensure you're not wasting water in the outdoor area? We caught up with Damien Webber to discuss ways in which you can have your sustainable garden.

How have the recent watering restrictions affected the nursery industry?

The water restrictions have meant that sales of exotic plants have decreased, while native and Mediterranean plants are now enjoying a well-deserved resurgence in popularity. It has also forced nurseries to take water and its use more seriously. More than ever we have to educate our customers.

Why should someone go to a nursery in person rather than ordering plants by mail or over the phone?

The staff in your local nursery create a sensory experience for you that is meant to inform and inspire. There is no substitute for being able to touch, smell and inspect that special plant you have grand plans for.

What is the advantage of going to an independent nursery rather than to a larger supermarket-style plant supplier?

From experience I know that we can offer better advice and stronger customer support. Make the staff your friends! We spend a lot of time on displays to give you a fresh direction and to provide inspiration. Make the most of us.

Do you encourage the use of organic techniques in the garden?

As the market for organic solutions grows with interest from the public, so does the range and quality of organic products. When they both do the same job, we will always recommend that you opt for the organic product. Visit our nursery and ask us for more details.

What are some current trends in the nursery industry?

With the cooler weather on the way, we are working hard to bring flowers back into gardens this season. Colour is back in, and we're heading into the perfect part of the year to enjoy it in all its glory.

What is your favourite part of the job?

It's definitely buying plants that I love, and then looking after them while they are here. The hardest part is watching them leave in the arms of somebody else.
