Trends in modern home furniture

image of adrian campbellIt's hard keeping up with the trends, especially in modern home furniture, so we caught up with expert Adrian Campbell to discuss contemporary styles that will keep you ahead of the pack.

What are the latest colour trends in modern home furniture?

When it comes to colour it's very much the earthy tones that people want. With larger items such as sofas, the palette tends to be fairly subdued, with browns and beiges dominating. But then an accent piece will be used for contrast. This can be done beautifully with colourful cushions or occasional furniture, such as a chair or ottoman.

What materials are popular with furniture coverings?

Although leather will always have its place, linen is definitely a popular way to go and you can now get some fantastic synthetic linens that are very easy to maintain. Another emerging trend for furniture is for more luxurious fabrics such as crushed velvets; ones with a richer, more opulent feel.

Is this luxurious trend just in fabrics?

Not at all. Everything from having big, deep cushions to more rustic, French provincial style dining tables reflects a new romantic feel, one of relaxed warmth that is increasingly influencing people's choices.

Does this mean that the clean lines are out?

Definitely not. Clean lines are still very important in the modern home furniture aesthetic, and keeping storage items and shelving relatively simple is still a popular look.

What's happening in modern furniture design?

People are opting for the low, sleek and deep styles of modular sofas, which are comfortable and adaptable to a range of configurations. And because they are so flexible it means that it's relatively easy to reconfigure your living room or take them with you when you move, as they will work in most locations.

How about the floor, what's going on down there?

Rug styles are pretty varied, but people really love the shaggier ones. In keeping with the new romantic look, you can now get rugs with a fine silk thread through them, so they shimmer.
