Bathroom design ideas: meeting the brief

image of karen ligdopoulosWhen you're looking for ways to get more bathroom design ideas, it pays to get in touch with an interior designer like Karen Ligdopoulos to find out just what you'll need to bring your designs to life.

How would you describe your design process?

From the client brief, we create the initial design using the 2D drafting software, AutoCAD. Once the client is happy with the design of the space, we find the finishes and fittings to achieve the desired look.

How can people create a timeless bathroom?

Less is more in the bathroom, so keep it simple. You can't go wrong with a white bathroom; they always look clean and crisp. A big white wall tile paired with a darker floor tile is timeless. Also look at the durability of your surfaces, because that can really date a bathroom.

What's worth spending a little extra money on in the bathroom?

You don't have to spend a lot of money on a bathroom to make it look good. Even an inexpensive ceramic tile can give you that 'wow' factor just from the way you place them.

What's your favourite bathroom material to work with?

I love working with natural products rather than synthetics – things like limestone, onyx, marble, granite and natural timbers.

What should people look for in an interior designer?

Most of my clients come to me from word of mouth. I think it's important for people to speak to others who have used an interior designer before and liked what they did. It's also important to find a designer who's going to work with you rather than just designing what they like.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy working with my clients to stretch their imaginations and give them an interior that they didn't think was achievable, and making their space more habitable.
