Expert advice on pool cleaning from John Horwood, a swimming pool cleaner from Aquavic.Q. What does your job involve on a day-to-day basis?
A. My job is to ensure that we always have sufficient stock - and variety of stock to satisfy all requirements. It is also important to keep abreast of developments within the industry and to be aware of pool cleaning products that will make the pool owner's tasks easier.
Q. What do you enjoy most about your job?
A. The regular field trips which take me all over the countryside and allow me, as a pool cleaner and expert, to keep in direct touch with our customers are great. To be invited in for a chat and a cuppa and to listen to a customer extolling the virtues of their new freshwater pool gives me a warm inner glow.
Q. How much would someone expect to pay for your pool cleaner services?
A. As a pool cleaning outfit, we have low overheads so we're in the enviable position of being able to sell our products below regular market prices.
Q. What makes your pool cleaning company different to your competitors?
A. We have a policy of giving a little extra here and there, which may not appear in our accounts receivable list, but pay for themselves in the "goodwill piggy bank".
Q. Are there any new technologies or methods used in your profession these days?
A. The principles of pool cleaners, such as freshwater ionisers, are based on laws of physics and chemistry which are centuries old and are unlikely to be displaced by new technology. However, there's always some technological development has the potential to affect the size and efficiency of the power supply.
Q. Why is your job important?
A. Our business provides an alternative to traditional pool cleaners - the chlorine-based chemicals used in pool cleaning. Ionisation provides a cleaner and greener solution. The filter backwash water may be used directly on gardens and lawns, or for stock watering. It is a freshwater system.
