Achieving the pool lifestyle

Expert advice on swimming pool construction from Ian Dickason, pools sales manager at Cookes Pools and Spas in Mildura, Victoria.

Q. How did you become involved in the pool industry?

A. We have a pool at home and I love the whole pool lifestyle. So after leaving the banking industry, I approached Cookes Pools and Spas to see if they had any positions available. Luckily they did and I have been here ever since. I started at the bottom, learning all about pools and pool construction, and I'm still learning today.

Q. What is your role with Cookes Pools and Spas?

A. I am currently the sales manager and spend my days talking to people to find out what they want from their pool and then packaging it up with a great pool construction offer.

Q. What changes have you seen in pools during your time in the industry?

A. In the nine years I've been in the industry there have been changes in the way pools are built; the equipment has become more refined and pools have generally grown in complexity. In-floor cleaning systems have become the norm rather than the exception and pool surfaces have progressed from paint and tile to the more popular quartz finish.

Q. How do you determine what the customer wants?

A. The customer is allowing us to create something in their backyard that is with them for life, so it’s important that we're attentive and listen to their needs and are with them every step of the way. We regularly ask our customers for feedback and monitor their responses to ensure we are doing a great job of fulfilling their dream of enjoying the backyard pool lifestyle.

Q. What have you learned the hard way?

A. To never take anything for granted or presume everything is okay. I have, at times, expected an aspect of the pool construction to be completed a certain way, only to find out later that it hadn't been done that way at all. Communication is a must to ensure everyone knows what is happening - when, how and why.

Q. What do you like most about your job? 

A. Swimming pools are great fun for families, promoting relaxation and a healthy lifestyle. I never get tired of talking about pools and helping people achieve this lifestyle.
