What should someone look for in choosing a pool designer?

They should look for experience, vision and innovation, and someone who's a good listener.

Can you share a few low-cost pool design tips?

Go for a simple design with good lighting, good finishing materials and a water feature.

What's the biggest budget blow-out in pool design?

Excavation (rock excavations) and the cost of material selections – tile costs vary, interior finishing costs vary from cheaper pebble to more expensive fully tiled pools.

What advice do you have for people budgeting for the design of their pool?

Engage an experienced designer with a good track record. You will get value for money out of your completed project with input from a good designer, saving you money and making the most out of your overall pool investment.

How would you describe your own set-up at home?

I have made the most use out of limited space and changes in ground levels. There is a smaller pool and an overflow tank on the lower side of the site, which not only gives a larger feel to the pool but also doubles as a water feature. I have also used good finishing materials.

What does it take to be a pool designer?

Imagination, good knowledge of local council approval requirements, good knowledge of the pool industry (equipment, accessories and finishing materials) and most importantly listening and communication skills.
