Great swimming pool designs

Modern swimming pool designs have leapt out of the conventional above-ground swimming pool and dived straight into custom layouts that suit your outdoor area. We caught up with pool design expert Maree Voss to find out what’s happening in the outdoor luxury space.

What types of swimming pool designs do you specifically deal with and what are their unique qualities?

Sapphire Pools sells both fibreglass and concrete swimming pools. There are currently 15 designs in Sapphire's fibreglass range, with new models soon to be released this year. The latest model is the Bermuda, which is triangular in shape and also features two hydrotherapy spa seats.

The Bermuda swimming pool is the only corner design in the market today and has been created to save space in today's shrinking backyards. Sapphire Pools can also custom build a concrete swimming pool of any shape and size. The design is only limited by your imagination and yard space.

What do you advise customers to consider before having a swimming pool installed?

Plan ahead to make the most of your outdoor investment. Sit down as a family and talk about your preferences, to determine the type of pool you would all enjoy.

Consider details such as the pool's position, your site conditions including soil type, how big and deep you would like it to be and any landscape design you would like. Then do your research and visit swimming pool companies to see what each has to offer.

What new pool technologies or trends are emerging?

As block sizes are becoming smaller, so are pool sizes. Swimming pool designs are also becoming more creative.

Geometric-style pools are much more popular today compared to the kidney shapes of the past. Sleek, modern, slimline pool designs that match today's modern architecture are in demand, while lap pools are particularly popular for concrete pool designs.

Colour schemes have also increased significantly from the original blue, ensuring that a swimming pool will complement any outdoor living area.

What changes have there been in the pool industry?

As today's consumers expect choice and variety, fibreglass pool builders have dedicated a lot of time and resources to new product development. This includes new designs, surface finishes and colours, so that each is able to offer pool buyers the largest selection possible.
