Swimming pool construction and your backyard

Why is your job important?

I feel the skills of pool construction need to be continually advanced. In a prefabricated world this is becoming extremely difficult.

What does your job entail on a day-to-day basis?

Firstly, I make sure the customers are satisfied, while overseeing all areas of pool construction. I also balance jobs with unforeseen weather. The most important thing I do is train people to carry on this unique skill into the future.

What differences do you find between creating commercial and residential pools?

Commercial work has another dimension, being almost always price driven. It moves faster and there is hardly ever any time to plan, but when it moves you have to be ready for it. Most carry substantial penalties if delays occur.

What challenges do you encounter with residential design?

It is becoming very difficult to be creative these days. Most of the time we are building to a budget.

What's new in pool building?

Other than filtration and manufactured attachments such as lighting, very little. Pools tend to be smaller, in more difficult locations, and with more stringent regulations.

Has the pool business changed in light of the extreme water restrictions?

In Cairns in Far North Queensland the restrictions have had no bearing at all, due to high rainfalls. In other areas the extreme water restrictions have put up the price of having a pool installed.
