Design a kitchen with expert advice

What's the first thing people should ask themselves when they decide to embark on a kitchen renovation?

I always encourage people to do a 'no budget' plan that encompasses lifestyle, family needs, as well as any kitchen features that may have been missing for them in the past. We then pare it down from there. My advice would be to take your time, use professional help and do a lot of research.

What 'look' is currently in for kitchens?

Kitchens still feature clean lines with appliances well hidden behind closed doors, natural materials and well-designed storage. But now we're also seeing an element of warmth and character - for example, some shelves that aren't so much for storage as a space for a personal display.

What's the one thing worth splashing out on in a kitchen?

Picking 'one thing' is tricky. For me personally, it's a beautiful set of top-of-the-range stainless steel cooking knives.

What's your favourite benchtop material?

Benchtops really depend so much on the individual client, their personality and their needs. But I love the functionality of stainless steel paired with a beautiful piece of wood. Milan oak and European ash are my favourites.

Do you prefer cupboards or drawers?

Definitely drawers. Objects stuck at the back of a cupboard far from reach are my personal nemesis.

How can people create a timeless kitchen?

This is my most desired goal for a client - in this time of such rapid change, I find the word timeless to be very valuable. My advice? Sit back, take your time and use professional help. Natural products like wood and stone, and stainless steel, always stand the test of time.
