If you're in the market for a new carpet rug, then chances are, the number of choices available to you are making you burn holes in the carpet you already have, which is why we've caught up with Lia Pielli from Designer Rugs to discuss the choices right for you.
I have a background in textiles - I majored in weaving and screen printing. I also have a good understanding of colour and space. From our point of view, we're designing a space, not just a rug.
I'm looking at colours, patterns and repeats. I need to understand what's in fashion and how to make that work for the space I'm designing.
They're actually quite broad. Until recently it was all monochromatic colours with shag pile and textures, but now we're looking at modern takes on florals. The revival of Florence Broadhurst wallpaper has helped in that regard.
We launched a range two years ago with Ikira that was based on kimono fabrics with lots of florals and repeat geometrics. We're also doing a new range with him now that continues that look.
Neutrals like beige and taupe are still in, but with strong accent colours. For example, chocolate with an accent of red or aqua. We're also working with lots of green. It's more eclectic now, with different pile heights and interesting textures like silk and viscose.
We look at the space – is the rug going to sit in front of furniture, or under it? A rug can't be placed too close to doors and cupboards or you may not be able to open them. Also, rugs should be vacuumed regularly and cleaned immediately if anything is spilt on them.
