What does it take to be a colour designer?

I did a three-year full-time degree in colour and design.

What should someone look for when searching for a colour designer?

People need someone with sufficient education in designing with colour. There are many half-baked short courses out there, but colour is one of the hardest elements of design. You also need someone who you feel understands the requirements of your home.

What is the current trend in colours for living areas?

There's no single trend, but different whites can emphasise a warm or cool feel, depending on what aspect the room faces. Metallics are quite big, and they're so elegant! They can just dress a room, but I'd use ones that don't overpower, like platinum or pewter.

How important is it to follow the newest fashions?

Younger people tend to follow fashion more, but I like to help people choose what's best for them. I use fan decks to get a general feel for whether they want bright bolds or muted colours. I like to extend people and make a statement with maybe one zany chair in a fabulous fabric.

How often should you update your colour scheme?

The general guide is every five years, when things start looking tired and dull. It can be as simple as adding bright zappy cushions in great colours and textures. Patterns are a powerful statement as well. Adding artworks or colourful prints can change a room, or new lights, or a new feature wall.

Can you bring more light into a room without knocking down walls?

You can paint the walls in light shades, or put a high-gloss white on the ceiling to reflect more light down. Pearlescent or pearl lustre sponged over the walls will lighten a room. Mirrors can reflect outdoor light and greenery, but don't make the room sterile. You need some contrast.
