Futon sofa beds are affordable, versatile and look great. So what do you need to know?
For people who are tight on space, futons are particularly attractive. These days there are versatile hardwood bases available that can easily convert the futon to a sofa when not in use. They are affordable and, because they are more flexible, are easier to move around as needed.
There are a number of fillings for futons, ranging from the traditional Japanese cotton or cotton and wool mixes, to ones with either foam or latex cores, which tend to provide greater softness. Latex is a more sustainable choice, as it is a natural rubber.
Because futons mould to the shape of the spine, they will provide support where needed. They generally come in three thicknesses, the thickest being the softest.
Traditionally, futons like to be rolled on a regular basis to revitalise their fibres, but most modern futons are too bulky for this. Instead, it is advisable to rotate and flip them occasionally to ensure you do not end up with a 'tunnel' where you sleep.
Futons come in the four standard bed sizes of king, queen, double and single. You can get each size in any of the three thicknesses that are available. Which size you get will depend on the size of your room and the level of softness you require.
It depends again on which type of filling you choose and the size and thickness.
