How to add colour to your bathroom design

Want to add some colour to your bathroom but don't know where to start? If your bathroom is stuck in neutral, consider adding colour to your bathroom design.

Don't fear colour - Despite the choices available, most people still tend to be afraid of using colour and stick to neutral tones in their bathroom design. But done well, adding colour can really lift a design and create a sense of fun or energy in the room - something that may be sorely needed for those early-morning starts!

Consider the size of the room - One size does not fit all in regard to colour. If your bathroom is on the smaller side, you should stick with a lighter colour scheme, as this will make the room seem larger. If you're lucky enough to have lots of space, you can choose more dramatic, darker tones.

Keep it subtle - Adding colour to your bathroom design doesn't mean you need to use it absolutely everywhere. A good way to introduce a colour scheme is to first choose a shade for the floor and then carry that highlight through the rest of the bathroom in a feature tile, or even some accessories.

Keep it simple - You don't need to renovate your entire bathroom to incorporate some colour. It can be as simple as adding a vertical stripe of mosaic tiles down one wall, or using tile paint to cheaply update your existing tiles.

Add extra lighting - If you choose a strong colour as the focus of your bathroom design, it may affect the way your skin tone is reflected and cause all sorts of make-up disasters. To account for this, you'll need to add appropriate lighting around the vanity mirror.

Not convinced? If you really can't face the idea of permanent colour, there are still some things you can do to liven up a clinical white bathroom. Spice up the space by incorporating some bright accessories, towels, or even add some coloured handles to your vanity unit - these are cheap and easy to change if you decide that colour isn't for you.
