Modern bathroom designs for a period home

1. Feature a freestanding bath tub

The smaller size of older bathroom designs will generally dictate a shower bath, but this does not have to limit you to a built-in variety. Freestanding baths can actually enhance the feeling of space in a small bathroom, with modern curved designs working well in period style homes.

2. Make the shower disappear

If you're lucky enough to have the space for a separate shower, don't close the room in with a bulky design. Instead make it almost invisible by using just a blade of shower glass to separate it from the basin area.

3. Hang your bathroom fittings

While great for storage, bulky bathroom vanities tend to make small spaces appear cramped, so opt for a wall-mounted type. Wall-hung fittings, such as vanities and toilets, increase the visible floor area, which creates an illusion of greater space.

4. Stay neutral with bathroom colour schemes

To make your modern bathroom blend in with the decor of your period home, it's best to avoid anything bright and bold that may clash with the classic design. Stick to neutral colour schemes and natural finishes.

5. Let there be light

Older homes tend to lack abundant natural light, making rooms appear small and uninviting. If your bathroom is on the dark side, consider installing a skylight to bring in the sun. Not only will it instantly create a larger and more modern feel, it will showcase your beautiful new fittings.

6. Elegant touches

Glass and chrome materials are perfect materials to complement the elegant detailing found in older homes. Bathroom mirrors are also a clever way to enhance the sense of space, and should be large and relatively plain in design.
