Great kitchen sink taps for your home

Mixer or standard?

Your first decision is whether to choose a mixer or a standard, basin-mounted set, which has separate controls for hot and cold water. Mixers are the most popular choice, and tend to be more user friendly, but it really comes down to your personal preference and budget.

Do you like how it looks?

Apart from how a tap works, it's important that you like the look of any tap you choose for your kitchen. Visit a showroom and you'll find handfuls of styles and shapes to choose from – again, it's a matter of which style you like best and which you think will suit your kitchen.

Do you like how it feels?

If you've decided to go down the mixer route, you'll discover that while some feel quite sturdy, others are more delicate to operate. Likewise, some feature 'controls' that swivel vertically while others are horizontal. Before you buy, you need to get 'hands on' to find out what you prefer.

Will it suit your sink?

Possibly more important than whether a tap will suit your kitchen, is whether it'll suit your sink, both aesthetically and practically. If your sink is large, think about whether the tap's spray will reach all corners. If not, it may be wise to opt for a tap with a pull-out spray.

Will it suit your budget?

Prices vary greatly in tapware. While it's important not to blow your budget, also be wary of scrimping too much – if you're spending a significant amount on a kitchen, finishes (like tapware) should do the final result justice.

Is it 'green'?

Tapware is now rated under the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards Scheme (WELS), which awards 'stars' depending on how efficient a tap is. The more stars, the more efficient the tap.
