Refrigerator reviews: which one should you choose?

image of a refrigeratorA refrigerator is an expensive kitchen purchase, so it's important to make the right decision.

Stainless steel or white?

The first thing you'll need to decide is whether you want a stainless steel fridge or a more traditional 'whiteware' version. Things to consider include budget (stainless steel is more expensive), what your other appliances look like and the overall look you're trying to achieve.

Is it energy efficient?

Your fridge will be running 24/7, so it's important to choose an energy-efficient model. When shopping around, compare star ratings (the more stars the better), but also avoid buying a fridge that's too big for your needs – a half-empty fridge costs more to keep cool.

Does it have the features you need?

These days fridges come with all sorts of bells and whistles, including ice makers, self-cleaning technology, antibacterial properties and even lockable compartments. So do your research and make sure that the fridge you choose is kitted out with all the capabilities necessary for your lifestyle.

Do you like the layout?

Refrigerator internal layouts can vary enormously. Make sure the fridge you choose suits how you typically use your fridge and what you like to store in it – or better still, look for one whose compartments and shelves can be moved around.

Is the freezer big enough?

Don't overlook the freezer. If you're buying a standard fridge and need a little extra freezer space, opt for an 'upside down' model. With the fridge portion on top, you get more freezer room down below.

Left or right?

Remember to work out which side you want your fridge to open on. Many manufacturers can build the fridge to your specifications, but if you're not sure, choose a model with easily adjustable hinges.
